Betty Marie "Mawmaw" Kersey

March 17, 1937 — December 11, 2017

Betty “MawMaw” Kersey, age 80, of Mount Pleasant, Tennessee passed away on December 11, 2017 at Maury Regional Medical Center.

Betty was born on March 17, 1937 in Giles County, TN to the late Robert and Annie Cummins.

Betty was fondly referred to as “MawMaw” by her loved ones, friends and many who knew her. She was married on July 5, 1953 to the late Clayburn Kersey. She was a military wife (Air Force) and a farmer’s wife and thoroughly enjoyed working alongside her husband on their farm. They enjoyed logging together, raising tobacco and providing for their family. She is quoted for saying: “It was hard work but it was a good life, I don’t regret any of it.” She loved to be in her kitchen making peanut brittle; which she sold at the Columbia Co-Op for many years. She also enjoyed baking cakes and provided her cakes for auctions where often times the cakes would go for $500.00 or more. She was a faithful member of Main Street Church of Christ in Mount Pleasant where she has attended for the last four years. Prior to that Betty was a very active Christian at the Spencer Hill Church of Christ, where all of her children were raised.

Betty is survived by her Daughter: Joan Kittrell and her Children: Angela Dye and Ben (Tracy) Kittrell; her Son: Randy (Sherrie) Kersey and their Children: C.J. (Cortany) Kersey, Marlinia (Joe) Rhodes, Maria (J.D.) Buckner, Caleb (Heather) Kersey, Will (Sarah) Kersey, David (Lindy) Hilliard and Sarah (Alan) Roberts; her Son: David Kersey and his Children: Carrie (Shannon) Davis, Jessica (Jay) Grooms and Brandi Chapman; her Daughter: Jennifer (Andy) Sensat and their Children: Lee (Casey) Sensat, Eric (Skylar) Sensat and Clay Sensat; 26 Great Grandchildren; Sister: Clara Baugus; many nieces and nephews; Sister in Law: Shirley Cummins and Special Friends: Lynn Smith, Carolyn Waldrop, Peggy McNeese, Margaret Norman, Ann Vandiver and Verba Cothran. Betty was preceded in death by her Husband: Clayburn D. Kersey; Siblings: Robbie Odom, Gladys Ragsdale, R.L. Cummins and Daughter in Laws: Tammy and Tina Kersey. She was also preceded in death by her Great Granddaughter Penny Kersey.

The family will visit with friends on Wednesday, December 13, 2017 at Williams Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant from 3:00pm until 9:00pm. They will also visit with friends at 9:00 am on Thursday, December 14, 2017. A Service will follow on Thursday, December 14, 2017 at 10:00 am at Williams Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant. Sons, Randy and David will be officiating. Nephew, Bob Cummins will lead Congregational Singing. Interment will follow at Spencer Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers include Betty’s Grandsons: CJ, Caleb and Will Kersey, Ben Kittrell, Lee, Clay and Eric Sensat, Andy Sensat and James Kittrell. Honorary Pallbearers are her Granddaughters.

Betty’s family would like to extend special thanks to her Sister in Law Sherlyn “Doochie” Kersey, who was also her loving caregiver.

Betty’s family respectfully asks that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Ronald McDonald House in honor of her Great Grandson Bentley Kittrell and the support that the Ronald McDonald House provided to their family.
