Doris Burks Bridges

August 21, 1938 — December 28, 2012

Mrs. Doris Willidean Burks Bridges passed away surrounded by family at St. Thomas hospital on December 28, 2012.

Doris was born in Mt. Pleasant, Tennessee to the late Claude Dean and Mattie Odom Burks on August 21, 1938. At the age of approximately 9 she had to quit school to take care of her younger siblings while both her parents worked in the fields to support the family. She often talked about having to stand in a chair at the stove in order to cook meals for the family. When her youngest brother, Rayburn was born, Doris told her baby sister, Martha not to worry; she would always be her baby. She was a great caregiver and a mama to everybody all her life.

In 1956 she married Robert Bridges with whom she eloped to Mississippi to get married at the age of 16. Together they had 3 children. Robert passed away in 1996 after 40 years of marriage. Mrs. Bridges was a babysitter in her home for many years helping to raise a lot of children in the community. She also worked at Hidden Acres as a cook before her retirement.

She loved her children, grandchildren and her dog “Puddin’” who passed away earlier and her bird “Nigel”. Doris loved flowers and working in her yard. She was of the Church of Christ faith.

Mrs. Bridges is survived by her children: Brenda Bridges (Michael) Gaddes of Mt. Pleasant, Anthony (Denise) Bridges of Culleoka and Robert (Jennifer) Bridges of Sanford, N. C.; her grandchildren: Michael (Crystal) Gaddes, Randy (Jill) Gaddes and Ashlynn Bridges; great-grandchildren: Ethan Gaddes, Shaun Gaddes, Lilly Gaddes and Landon Gaddes; brother: Rayburn Dean (Kathy) Burks; special friends: Billie Jo Hough, Nettie Gibson and Bill and Grace Ferguson.
