Estelle Starling Johnson

February 14, 1920 — October 28, 2014

Estelle Starling Johnson, age 94 and a longtime resident of Brookside, passed away Tuesday, October 28, 2014 at Signature Healthcare in Columbia, Tennessee.

Estelle was born February 14, 1920 in Pearson, Georgia to the late Kenneth C. Starling and the late Clyde Minshew Starling. She attended Hopewell High School in Virginia and was chosen Miss Hopewell in 1934. As Miss Hopewell she stood before the Virginia General Assembly and recited, “In Flander’s Field.” This was quite an accomplishment for a fourteen year old, and she was still able to recite the poem at age 94. Estelle worked at Continental Can Corporation in Hopewell as a receptionist and switchboard operator. She was a communicant of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Hopewell, Virginia and St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Columbia, Tennessee. Estelle was very active in both churches she attended. Estelle was a regular member of the Wednesday Bridge Club and enjoyed both bowling and golf. She was a wonderful seamstress and made many elaborate items of clothing for her family.

Estelle is survived by her daughter, Carmen (Bruce) Weaver of Fredericksburg, Virginia; one son, William F. (Claudia) Johnson, III of Columbia, Tennessee; grandchildren, Donald (Lisa) Baxter, Phillip (Lisa) Baxter, Peter (Christa) Baxter, Kevin (Laura) Miller, Dean (Jecinda) Johnson, and Tammy Cowley; four great grandsons, eleven great grand daughters, and one great great grandson; and a host of Starlings, Griffis, and Minshews in Eastern Virginia and Wiregrass, Georgia.

She is preceded in death by her husband, William F. Johnson, Jr.; one daughter, Susan Lynn Johnson; parents, Kenneth and Clyde Starling; siblings, Evadell Starling Drinkard, Evelyn Starling, Eloise Starling Brenamen, and Charles Starling.

Funeral services for Mrs. Johnson will be held on Friday, October 31, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church with Rev. Tom Wilson officiating. Burial will follow at Polk Memorial Gardens.

The family extends a special thanks to the Signature Healthcare Staff, especially, Susan, Crystal, Allison and to Diana Polk who always made Estelle laugh and her life more enjoyable. Thanks also to Avalon Hospice for their friendship and caring attention.
