Mary Sue Drerup Holland

Mary Sue (Drerup) Holland, 85, of Columbia, a lifelong resident of Union City, died Jan. 31, 2016, at her home in Columbia.

Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at White-Ranson Funeral Home, with Father Dennis Schenkel officiating. Burial will follow in East View Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until the hour of services Tuesday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons, great-grandsons and grandsons-in-law. Honorary pallbearers will be Mary Lynn and Marion Reithel, Dick Barlow, Gary Blair, Tommy Turnbow, Rose Ann Winters and Joann Carr.

The family requests that memorials be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or to the charity of the donor’s choice.

She was born May 17, 1930, in Union City, daughter of the late Mary (Killion) and Alphonse L. Drerup Sr. She married Charles R. Holland Jan. 12, 1969. He passed away March 6, 2011. She was a homemaker and a loving mother and was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

She is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, Stephen E. Merritt of Nashville, John D. and Sherry Merritt of Columbia and Don and Teri Merritt of Smyrna; five grandchildren and the spouses of three, John Allen and Shannon Merritt, Becky and Brent Buchanan, Allen B. Merritt IV, Sarah and Cody Wright and Dylan Merritt; five great-grandchildren, Leah Merritt, Max Merritt, Luke Merritt, Emmy Merritt and Elijah Wright; her sister, Pat Kasnow of Union City; her brother, A.L. “Bud” Drerup Jr. of Alexandria, La.; and her former daughters-in-law, Lisa (McIllwain) Merritt and Vilanda (Ingrum) Merritt.

She was also preceded in death by her son, Allen B. Merritt III; and two brothers, Gene “Pinky” Drerup and Jack Drerup.

The family expresses special appreciation to Dr. Ben Gardner and the Compassus Hospice Staff — Rita, Laura, Contessa and Susan.
