Sara Herbert Jewell of Columbia passed away on Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at her residence.
Born on September 12, 1927, Mrs. Jewell was the daughter of the late George O. Herbert, Sr. and Gladys Holt Herbert of Brentwood. She was also preceded in death by her husband of over 60 years, Richard E. Jewell, Sr.; Brothers, John T. Herbert, R.N. Herbert, and George O. Herbert, Jr.; and Sister, Martha H. England, all of Brentwood.
Survivors include her two sons, Richard E. Jewell, Jr. (Jennie Grace) and John H. Jewell (Margie) of Columbia; Six grandchildren, Vicky A. (Billy) Butler, Lesa Andrews, John C. (Regina) Jewell, Jenny J. Shaw, Elizabeth J. (Felipe) Freixo of Houston, TX and R. Smith Jewell (Mary Marshall) of Richmond, VA; Six great granddaughters, Kaylee Osborne, Savannah Monhollen, Olivia Shaw, Isabella Jewell, Alessandra Freixo, and Mary Everette Jewell; Two great grandsons, Chase Cribbs and Will Monhollen, all who lovingly called her nanny.
She is also survived by her two sisters, Polly H. (James) Martin of Brentwood and Rosa H. Hester of Hendersonville; Several nieces and nephews and special friends, Aileen A. Alderson, Gayle Owens, Edie Hines, and Wanda Stocke.
A homemaker and devoted mother and grandmother, Mrs. Jewell was a long time resident of Graymere, a member of the Graymere Church of Christ, the UDC and previously a volunteer for the hospital auxiliary. She enjoyed keeping an immaculate home, attending to her local great grandchildren, working in her yard, watching college basketball, especially the UT girls, and in her earlier years, boating and water skiing on the Tennessee River.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society and Saint Jude Children’s Hospital.
Her family expresses their sincere gratitude to Dr. Ben Gardner and to Dr. Charles Ball and the staff of Compassus Hospice and Palliative Care.
The family will visit with friends on Saturday, July 1, 2017 from 9:00 to 10:00 AM at Williams Funeral Home in Columbia. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 AM on Saturday following the visitation with John Vaughn officiating. Burial will follow at Stand Cemetery.
Dr. Billy Wayne Akin, Lynn Beasley, Jimmy Bennett, Billy Butler, Luke Whitaker, Perry England, Bob Herbert, Tom Herbert, Donnie Whitaker, and David Williams will serve as pallbearers.
