Tommy Ray Bassham

June 1, 1944 — February 13, 2017

Mr. Tommy Ray Bassham, age 72, of Columbia, passed away on Monday, February 13, 2017, at NHC Maury Regional.

Tommy was born on June 1, 1944, in Mt. Pleasant, Tennessee to Henry Bassham and Nannie Frizzell Bassham, and was one of nine children. He married Loretta Lynn Busby and the two had fifty-one years of marriage together, raising a family, working hard to serve their community and loving and supporting each other.

Tommy was a graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School and went on to graduate from Belmont College. His early career was in Maury County and he was very active in the community. He had an extensive banking career and was known for never meeting a stranger. He had a very loving nature and was “kindness personified”, always believing the best in people. His family recalls that he was known as a businessman, but his “real life” was people. The joy of his life were his wonderful grandchildren and his grandpup, Elwood. He and Loretta attended First Family Church in Columbia.

He is survived by his loving wife: Loretta Bassham of Columbia; children: Jennifer Bassham and Brian (Melissa) Bassham; grandchildren: Chaney (Jared) Sullivan, Megan McKinney and Lucy Bassham; siblings: William Ernest “Pete” (Judy) Bassham, David (Vickie) Bassham and Joyce (David) Hughes; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his siblings: Bettye (Howard) Cornwell, Sue (Buford) Plew, Jane (George) Peden, Charles Bassham and Jim Bassham.
