Veronica G Fryer

October 7, 1925 — February 23, 2018

Veronica G. Fryer, age 92, of Columbia, Tennessee, passed into eternity at her home in Columbia, TN on Friday, February 23, 2018, surrounded by her children.
Veronica (aka Ronnie or Miss V) was born Wednesday, October 7, 1925 in Pittsburgh, PA to the late William Earl and Eveleen Veronica Scarbrough.
Veronica is survived by daughters: Helen Ussery of Columbia, TN, Karen Dillon of Rogersville, TN, Diane Corbin and husband Jack of Columbia, TN; son: James David Schwartz and his wife Suparat, of Tamarac, FL; 8 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; 4 great great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was born third of seven children. She had 2 brothers and 4 sisters. The youngest sister, Nancy Behner, survives her and is living in the Dallas, TX area.
Veronica chose to end her schooling in the 8th grade to help her mother care for her siblings. She also cared for her mother and a sister before their passing.
When she was 17, Veronica moved to Washington DC to be with her mother and was one of the millions of women who went to work on the home front to support the war effort. She worked at the United States Treasury and at the Army Map Service, where she operated a printing press.
She spent many hours at the USO (United Service Organization) doing what she loved best, dancing. Often time escorted by her new love, James (Jimmie) Schwartz, Jr., whom she met at the Army Map Service.
She and Jimmie married in 1946 after he returned from Europe. Jimmie was a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne during WWII and participated in the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium. Jimmie remained in the military after the war, with Veronica and their two daughters accompanying him to Europe on two tours to Germany and France. They had their third and fourth child while overseas. This was another especially memorable time for Veronica as she loved to travel. She loved to share her adventures overseas and her children and grandchildren would spend hours listening.
They returned home to settle in Virginia with their children. Unfortunately Jimmie passed into eternity in April 1969. Veronica married again in 1971 to Marvin Fryer, whom has since passed.
Veronica moved to South Florida to be near her mother, spending many years there, enjoying her grandchildren, the beach, and of course dancing. In her later years, Veronica spent many hours with her grand and great grandchildren playing card games, doing puzzles, and enjoying the Where’s Waldo Books. She loved Florida, but did make one last move to Columbia, TN to be near two of her daughters and their children.
She was one of the “greatest generation”!
