Autumn Jane Hirsch

August 12, 2007 — April 18, 2022

Autumn Jane Hirsch, age 14, passed away of respiratory failure from cancer just after Easter Sunday, on Monday, April 18, 2022, at Monroe Carell Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. She was the beloved daughter of Samuel and Mindy Hirsch and was born August 12, 2007, in Kingsport, Tennessee.

She was the granddaughter of the late Linda Voltz Abrams, the late Sarah Jane McDaniel Hirsch, and the late Larry Hirsch. Autumn was named for Sarah Jane Hirsch, and although her grandmother did not live long enough for them to meet, they shared some traits in common. Both enjoyed sewing, and both loved coffee. Autumn so loved coffee, somedays she required two trips to Dunkin for a cup.

Autumn attended Mt. Pleasant High School where she was a freshman. She had an interest in art and loved to paint and draw. Also, she was a self-taught gymnast, practicing hour after hour on a bare swing set. When the family moved to Middle Tennessee in 2017, she entered an official gymnastic organization and progressed to a level 6 gymnast. For the past four years, she attended Let It Shine Organization and greatly enjoyed competing. She was always a good sport.

Among her other loves were her two cats and two dogs, who loved her as much as she loved them. She especially loved sunsets and took many beautiful photographs of them, saying they had a calming effect on her. She loved music, enjoying Billie Eilish, Juice Wrld, Phoebe Bridgers, and other artists.

At times Autumn could have a difficult personality, as we all know. But the last six months she was her true self. She had a good sense of humor and displayed her strength and endurance and ability to share her nice thoughts and feelings about others and her family. Her writing and grammar just blossomed.
Her bravery was always shining through during her cancer treatments. She was always smiling, laughing, and never once asked “Why me?” Through all her treatments, procedures, and the one rough week at home, Autumn continued to fight. She was a champ and made sure to keep pushing.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her older brother, Ben Hirsch, who is a junior at Mt. Pleasant High School. For the last 22 days of her life, Ben and both her parents stayed with her in her room at the hospital around the clock. Also, surviving are her aunt Missy Naugle (Paul), cousins Alexander and Ian Naugle, and other family and friends including Brogan. And of course her best friend Addison McAllister.

A celebration of life will be held for Autumn at 6:00 PM at Williams Funeral Home with Bro. Bob Vassar officiating. The family will receive friends from 4:00 pm to the start of the service at Williams Funeral Home in Columbia, Tennessee. Following the service, the family will hold a balloon release in honor of Autumn.
