Barbara Cates

Barbara Cates, 79, of Lynnville, Tennessee, passed away peacefully at her home on May 17, 2025.

Barbara was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose warmth and strong spirit touched everyone who knew her. She is lovingly survived by her children: Darin Cates, Teresa Cates, and Lynn Cates; ten grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, L.O. Cates, as well as her aunt who raised her, Tressie Mae Brady; and her siblings: Kenneth Dooley, Margaret Ann Inselman, Joyce McBride, and Betty Presley.

A devoted Christian, Barbara lived her faith through quiet compassion and kindness. She was always concerned for the well-being of others, offering care, encouragement, and thoughtful words to family, friends, and neighbors alike.

Barbara found great joy in life’s simple pleasures. She had a deep love for the outdoors and was especially delighted in tending to her flower garden, where her favorite peonies bloomed in abundance. Known for her meticulous nature, Barbara took great pride in keeping a spotless home and always made time to keep her fingernails looking beautiful—a small but joyful ritual that reflected her graceful attention to detail.

Her absence will be deeply felt by all whom she knew and loved her—especially by her son, Darin, who devotedly cared for her in her later years. Her daughter Teresa also offered support and assistance whenever she could, for which the family is deeply grateful.

Visitation will be held on May 20 from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at Williams Funeral Home in Columbia. A funeral service to celebrate Barbara’s life will take place on May 21 at 2:00 PM, with Minister Jerry Golden officiating.Burial will follow in Lynnwood Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Andrew Gray, Melvin White, Michael Tipper, David Taylor, Jaylin Hill, Darin Cates, and Gary Taylor.
