Obituary

Betty Gray Kincaid, 93, passed away on March 23, 2026, in Columbia, TN.

She was born on April 23, 1932, in Nashville, Tennessee, to the late William W. Gray and Mamie Head Gray. Betty was raised on the family farm in Madison, Tennessee, where she learned the value of hard work and service. Betty graduated from Goodlettsville High School and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Tennessee.

While living in Knoxville, Betty taught at Young High School and began her lifelong commitment to volunteer service as a uniformed member of the Civil Air Patrol. In this role, she organized airborne patrols and participated in search and rescue missions, flying in light aircraft.

Betty devoted many years to Girl Scouting, serving as an assistant troop leader and council volunteer, and later as co-director of summer camp at Camp Tannassie on Woods Reservoir near Tullahoma, Tennessee. She continued her career with the Cumberland Valley Girl Scout Council in Nashville as a member of the executive management staff. After moving to Mobile, Alabama in 1981, Betty became the Director of Activities at Westminster Village senior living community in Spanish Fort, Alabama. She later returned to Girl Scouting as Director of Properties and Camping for the Deep South Girl Scout Council, a position she held until her retirement in 1997.

In addition, Betty worked extensively with the American Camping Association at the local, regional, and national levels, helping to establish and promote safety standards for youth camps across the country.

An avid traveler, Betty visited all 50 states and 35 countries. She also had a lifelong love of sports, whether coaching the girls’ basketball team at Andrew Price Methodist Church in Donelson, Tennessee; playing tennis at Ravenwood Country Club in Hermitage, Tennessee; cheering for the Tennessee Volunteers football team and Lady Vols basketball; or enjoying a round of golf herself. Betty was a member of the Azalea City Ladies Golf Association and the Gulf Pines Ladies Golf Association, where she served as both a committee chair and officer. She also served on the board of the Alabama Golf Coast Ladies Golf Association.

Betty is survived by her children: William Bradley (Kristin) Kincaid III of LaVergne, TN, and Elizabeth (James) Davenport of Mount Pleasant, TN; grandchildren: Andrew Scates, Braelyn Kincaid Nores, and Will Kincaid; and sister: Mary Lou Gray (Ray) Martin of Goodlettsville, TN.

She was preceded in death by her sisters: Aliene Gray (Jim) Roberts of Sharon, TN, and Jane Gray (Joe) Kinsolving of Madison, TN; and her closest friend, Earline Locke of Mobile, AL.
