Obituary

Brian James Miller, age 59, passed away on October 2, 2026, surrounded by those he loved most in Columbia, Tennessee, after a long battle with kidney disease.

The son of Carolyn Miller and the late James R. Miller, Brian had a curious mind and a natural desire to understand how things worked. Whether exploring technology, building a computer, or making music, he found joy in learning and creating.

Brian graduated from Columbia Central High School with the Class of 1985. A gifted musician, he played lead trumpet and French horn as a member of the marching band. His fascination with technology led him to continue his education at ITT, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. Building computers became a favorite hobby, combining his love of discovery with the satisfaction of making something work.

While working on animatronics at Chuck E. Cheese, Brian met the love of his life, Melissa Chapin. They married on October 22, 1993, beginning a partnership that would span nearly 33 years. They shared many interests, but their curiosity about how things functioned was a constant thread throughout their life together. From the days of the Commodore 64 and Windows 3.11, they enjoyed tinkering with computers and imagining how technology might transform everyday life. Through each new chapter, Brian and Melissa seemed to work best together.

Beyond computers and circuitry, Brian was an enthusiastic Star Trek fan. Its vision of the future appealed to the same curiosity that inspired him to learn, explore, and imagine what might come next.

For all his talents and interests, Brian will be remembered most for his big, kind heart. He was a loving husband, a devoted father, and someone who cared deeply for others. The life he shared with his family, and the love he gave so freely, will remain his most lasting legacy.

Brian’s memory will be cherished by his loving wife, Melissa Miller; their son, Joey Miller; his mother, Carolyn Miller; his sister, Carol Griffith; his aunt, Deanie; his close cousin, Kurt Masters; and several other beloved family members.

In addition to his father, James R. Miller, Brian was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Carl and Margaret Masters, his paternal grandmother, Ann Miller, and his maternal uncle, Kurt Masters.

Brian leaves behind a lifetime of shared discoveries, music, laughter, and love, a life remembered with affection by those who knew him best.

A Celebration of Life to honor Brian and a life well lived will be announced at a later date.
