Obituary

James Buford Pickens, affectionately known as Buford, passed away on June 15, 2026, after a life marked by hard work, kindness, and devotion to family and friends.

Born on August 7, 1957, at Baptist Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee, Buford was the son of the late Annie Buford Smith and James Hall Pickens. Raised in the Nashville area, he attended Crieve Hall Elementary School, where he was active in the Boy Scouts. He later attended McMurray Middle School and John Overton High School, where he served as manager of the track team and studied horticulture.

Following graduation, Buford attended Nashville Area Vocational Technical School, where he trained as a Tool and Die Maker and earned a Certificate of Completion in his field. He went on to build a distinguished career spanning more than four decades. Buford began his professional journey with Teledyne in Nashville before accepting a position with Tenneco Automotive, later known as Federal-Mogul and Tridon, in Smyrna, Tennessee. Through dedication and a strong work ethic, he remained with the company for 40 years before retiring in August 2024.

A man of faith, Buford was a member of Brentwood Cumberland Presbyterian Church, where he faithfully served as an acolyte during his younger years.

Outside of work, Buford enjoyed spending time fishing and was a devoted fan of NASCAR and SEC sports. He cherished attending races and sporting events with friends and found joy in the simple pleasures of life.

After retirement, Buford made his home in Giles County, Tennessee. He will be remembered for his caring spirit, generous heart, and the genuine kindness he extended to everyone he met. His presence brought comfort and friendship to many, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his sister, Cheryl Anne Pickens; first cousins, Gayle Smith Williams, Betty Smith Pigg, and Meacham Orr; second cousins, Michael Williams, Laurie Williams Warren (Jim), Rita Williams Thompson (Ted), William Pigg (Becca), and Jennifer Pigg (Sam); along with numerous extended family members and friends who will cherish his memory.

A graveside service will be conducted at 1:00 PM at Lynnwood Cemetery in Lynnville, Tennessee, with Bob Vassar officiating on Thursday, June 18, 2026.
