Obituary

Edward Eugene “Gene” Pigg, 89, passed away peacefully at his home in Summertown, Tennessee, on February 20, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family and the land he cherished so dearly.

Gene was born to Roy and Ada Pigg, who preceded him in death, along with his brother, Leland Pigg, and grandson Bradley Pigg. He is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Betty Smith Pigg, whose partnership and companionship were a steady blessing throughout the years. Together they built a life rooted in faith, family, and hard work.

He leaves behind a legacy of love in his children: Rita (Mac) Cobler, Roy Gene (Sherry) Pigg, Beverly Pigg, Lee Ann (Allen) Spencer, William (Rebecca) Pigg, and Jennifer Pigg (Samuel McGuire). He is also survived by his siblings, Dale Pigg, and Sarah Lynn Davis; fifteen grandchildren; and twenty-one great-grandchildren, each of whom brought him immense pride and joy.

Gene was a hardworking man who believed deeply in providing for his family and living with purpose. A skilled pipefitter by trade, he had an extraordinary knack for fixing just about anything that was broken. If something needed repairing, family and friends knew Gene would find a way to make it right. His hands were rarely still, and his work was always done with care and determination.

He proudly served his country in the United States Navy, carrying that same sense of duty and honor throughout his life. Gene admired honesty in others and lived by a simple but profound understanding that everything has a purpose. He approached life with that belief at his core.

Known for his wonderful sense of humor, Gene was a consistent jokester who could lighten any room with a quick wit and a playful grin. His laughter was contagious, and his stories will be told and retold for years to come.

Gene had a deep affection for the land and for farming. He found peace in nature and loved all animals of creation. He often reminded those around him, “Never mistreat animals,” a phrase that reflected the gentleness of his heart. His love for living things extended to his own unique pets, Burt and Ada, and favorite dog, Mason, all who held a special place in his life.

Whether watching NASCAR races, lending a helping hand to someone in need, or spending time with his growing family, Gene lived fully and generously. He will be remembered as a man of integrity, humor, and unwavering love for those around him.

Visitation with the family will be held on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home in Columbia. Friends may visit prior to the service beginning at 12 noon until 1:00pm. The Celebration of Life will take place on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at 1:00 p.m., also at Williams in Columbia. Gene will be laid to rest at Summertown Cemetery.

Active pallbearers are Michael Williams, William Pigg, Bronson Herity, Heath Pigg, Reece Spencer and Sam McGuire. Honorary pallbearers are Mac Cobler, Blake Herity, Donald Love, Tavin Cheek, Tatum McGuire and Michael Howell.

American Legion Post 19 will be rendering military honors.

Though he will be deeply missed, the lessons he taught, the laughter he shared, and the love he gave will continue to guide his family for generations to come.
