Gary Allen Shaw, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on July 7, 2026, in Nashville, Tennessee, at the age of 69. Gary was born on November 29, 1956, in Germany, to Bernell and Carol (Weigum) Shaw. True to form, he packed more living into his years than most people would manage in two lifetimes.

Gary grew up in Bismarck, North Dakota, alongside his mother and his sister, where his adventurous spirit and love of people first took root. He enlisted in the United States Navy as a young man, serving first as a corpsman before earning his commission as an officer. While serving, he earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees, and along the way he married the love of his life, Trisha. Over a distinguished 21-year career, Gary rose to the rank of Lieutenant Commander, leading with the same charisma and dedication that would define the rest of his life. After retiring from the Navy, he carried that leadership into healthcare, serving as a hospital executive in multiple states before capping his career with a position at the White House — a fitting achievement for a man who never stopped aiming higher.

During his remarkable life, he dabbled in many hobbies and alternative careers. For instance, he worked at not one, but two radio stations, proving he was as much of a natural behind the microphone as he was in the boardroom. Even in his later years, he taught high school classes, worked as a professional healthcare coach, and functioned as a security officer at concerts in Nashville. Gary had many hobbies including: fishing, golfing, gardening, biking, and flying as a private pilot. Gary’s true talent, though, was people. He was famously charismatic, a natural leader, and someone who left a mark on everyone he met. He could talk to anyone about anything, making friends wherever life took him — a checkout line, a golf course, a cockpit, it didn’t matter — and he was always more than happy to lend a hand or offer advice to anyone who needed it. Gary truly believed in sharing everything he had learned with the next generation.

Gary often paid homage to his wife Trisha, who supported his endless hobbies, moves across the country, talents, and career development. Together, they had two children, Megan and Christopher. Gary and Trisha enjoyed quiet cups of coffee together on their porch, biking, gardening, and caring for their pet animals. Gary always sought out a good adventure “with his bride,” traveling the country together from California to Maine, Florida to Alaska, and everywhere in between. More than anything, Gary cherished being a husband, father, and grandfather.

Gary always had stories he loved telling, often more than once, and always with a little more flair each time. None was dearer to him than the story of how he found his two brothers, Cordell and Bob Shaw, later in life. Relationships with people were the cornerstone of Gary’s life. His relationships with his grandchildren were always filled with energy and excitement. His grandkids knew him best as the man who was the silliest “tickle monster,” made the tastiest pancakes, and had the coolest train horn in his truck. Gary always made time for his four beloved grandchildren and enjoyed hearing about them.

He is survived by his wife, Trisha (Gannon) Shaw; his daughter, Megan (Shaw) Lugg, her husband Gunter Lugg, and their children, Mason and Addison; and his son, Christopher Shaw, his wife Kari (Seegmiller) Shaw, and their children, Colton and Keeley.

Gary Shaw lived a life defined by service, curiosity, and love — for his country, his career, his hobbies, and above all, his family. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered for his laughter, his leadership, and his boundless energy for life.

A funeral service will be held at St. Catherine of Siena in Columbia, TN, on July 16, 2026, at 12:30 PM. Visitation will be from 11:30-12:30 at the church.
