Joanne Abens, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on November 12, 2024, at Bailey Manor Assisted Living in Fayetteville, Tennessee. She was born on July 3, 1937, to the late John and Erna Duy.
Joanne lived a full life devoted to her family and her many passions. Known for her skill with needle and thread, she spent countless hours sewing, knitting, and mastering the art of quilting. Her creativity was also seen in her gardens, where she grew a colorful array of flowers. Joanne cherished time with her family and loved to entertain, filling her home with laughter, games of dominos, and spirited card matches.
She is preceded in death by her husband, James Abens; her daughter, Cynthia Abens; and her parents. Joanne is survived by her children, Jeff Abens (Patti) and Debbie (Pete) Garza; her grandsons, Matthew Abens (Kaitlyn) and Ryan Abens of Chattanooga; great-granddaughter: Aubrey Abens; and her sister, Jackie Duy Koepchen of Fort Meyers, Florida.
Joanne’s warmth, kindness, and playful spirit will be dearly missed. Her family and friends will carry forward her legacy of love, creativity, and joy for life.
The family will receive from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 550 4th Avenue, Aurora, Illinois, 60505 on December 12, 2024. A memorial service will be at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 550 4th Avenue, Aurora, Illinois, 60505 at 11:00 AM on December 12, 2024, with Pastor Jacob Stoltzman officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be to St Mark Lutheran Church, 21 S. Baird Ave.,Rhinelander, WI 54501
