Larry J. Hazlerig

October 27, 1940 — January 28, 2023

Larry Jack Hazlerig, age 82, passed away on January 28, 2023. He was born on October 27, 1940, in Garland, Tennessee to Jack and Ola Mae Hazlerig. He attended Byars-Hall High School in Covington, Tennessee.

Larry is survived by a daughter, Traci Campbell, of Germantown, Tennessee, a son, Cary (Catherine) Hazlerig of Spring Hill, Tennessee, and a brother, Jerry “Butch” (Brenda) Hazelrig of Covington, Tennessee. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Carolyn Hazlerig, and siblings: Betty Shaw, Sue Blair, Donald Hazlerig (survived by PJ Hazlerig), Lesa Everson, and Nickey Hazlerig.

He was best known as “Poppy” by his grandchildren: Jack Hazlerig, Hudson Hazlerig, Caroline Campbell, and Paul Hazlerig. We take great comfort in knowing he was reunited in heaven with his wife of many years, Joan. In years past, Larry enjoyed traveling and taking an occasional trip to the casinos with Joan and their best friends, the Gandys and Bardens. Larry was a successful salesperson for much of his life. He worked for numerous car dealerships in the Memphis area. His most memorable years were served at Foster Auto World as the proud and hardworking Sales Manager. He enjoyed a good western movie in his free time. Larry served in the United States Army Reserves.

Our family would like to sincerely thank the staff at NHC HealthCare in Columbia, Tennessee. They provided the most loving care to our Poppy. The staff did not have a shortage of funny Larry Hazlerig stories. He kept the entire facility on its toes for the last 13 months with his unique personality. When the doctor and nurses would ask his name to check his mental status, he was known to often reply “Luke Warmwater”. He will be greatly missed by all.

His nephew, Pastor Greg Hazelrig, will officiate the memorial service at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church (3787 Pleasant Hill Road, Olive Branch, Mississippi) on Saturday, March 4, 2023, at 2:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Matthew 25 Ministries (a homeless ministry in downtown Memphis led his nephew, Pastor Greg Hazelrig). Site for Matthew 25 Ministry info: https://www.facebook.com/Matthew-25-Ministries-108573357567431
