Laura Ellyn Couch Echols, age 72, passed away on July 31, 2026, at Maury Regional Medical Center.

Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, Laura was the beloved daughter of Alex Thomas Couch and Naomi Flory Couch. Her life was defined by compassion, devotion, and a love story that began all by chance in the sixth grade.

It started when someone strategically placed a Valentine’s Day card in Laura’s bag, an innocent gesture that brought her and J. Bryan Echols together. They remained close friends throughout their youth before beginning to date in high school. In time, Laura and Bryan realized they were destined to share a life together, and they went on to cherish 48 beautiful years of marriage.

Following graduation, Bryan left to serve in the United States Air Force while Laura pursued her education in nursing. Her choice of profession reflected the heart she carried throughout her life: caring, compassionate, and always willing to help others in any way she could. Laura also faithfully supported Bryan throughout his 22 years of military service, creating a loving home wherever life took them.

Their journey led them to live in several states and overseas, gathering memories and friendships along the way. Eight years ago, Laura and Bryan settled in Columbia, Tennessee, where they found the quiet life they desired and made a home together.

Laura will be remembered for her gentle compassion, her devotion to others, and the steadfast love she shared with Bryan. From a Valentine’s card tucked into a schoolgirl’s bag to nearly five decades of marriage, theirs was a beautiful story of friendship, faithfulness, and a love meant to last. Laura’s presence will be deeply missed, but the kindness she gave and the love she shared will remain in the hearts of all who knew her.
