Shirley Smith

Shirley M. Smith,78, died on September 3, 2022 at Maury Regional Medical Center. She was born in Columbia on October 18, 1943 to the late Sam Hughes Smith and Louise Holt Smith. She grew up on her family’s farm on Rippey Lake Road near Mt. Pleasant, where she lived almost her entire life. After her mother’s death in 1985, Shirley successfully managed the farm and preserved its antebellum farmhouse.
Shirley graduated from Hay Long High School in 1961 and subsequently attended Columbia Business College. Before her retirement, she was employed as a secretary at Columbia Gulf Transmission Company. She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church, Mt. Pleasant. She especially loved children, and was a beloved aunt to her many nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
Shirley is survived by her brother, Wayne Smith of Panama City, Florida and Mt. Pleasant. She is preceded in death by her twin sister, Martha Smith Jackson, and by her other siblings, Dorothy Smith Hines, Catherine Smith McBride, Bill Smith, J.L. Smith, and Carolyn Smith Sisk.
Funeral services will be on Wednesday, September 7, 2022 at 1:00 PM at Polk Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be at Williams Funeral Home in Columbia, Tennessee from 11:00 AM to 12:45 PM. Active pallbearers will be Mark Hines, Scott Jackson, Brian Jackson, Zachary Sisk, Tony Smith, and Tim Smith.
